Coach Ted A. Fowler

86, passed away on Sept. 16, 2016 with his wife, Kaye & family at his bedside, in their home. Ted was born in Dayton, OH on Jan. 23, 1930 to Clarence C. Fowler & Ella L. Bobbitt. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Kaye L. Fowler of Mesa; son, Koby (Sami) A. Fowler of Mesa; and Grandchildren, Marley (7 yrs) & Mariah (4 yrs); and children from prior marriages: Carey A. Fowler of IA; Perry L. Fowler of OR; Sara M. Fowler Neily of Phoenix; Ted A. Fowler II of TX. Ted was a Teacher & Coach at Mesa High School for 25 years. Ted, being from Dayton, Ohio, lived there to the age of 9 years old. His father passed in the home at the age of 29. Ted’s mother moved them to Detroit, Michigan to live with Ted’s Grandparent’s. In 1945, Ted’s parents moved to Phoenix, Arizona. Ted went to Phoenix Union High School. He received a 4-year athletic scholarship to play baseball for the University of Arizona. Ted’s college years were shortened when he joined the Naval Reserves and they were the first called to The Korean War (1950-1953). Ted served on the 2nd USS Yorktown Aircraft Carrier (CV-10). Ted worked on the Fighter Jets in Hydraulics and Pneumatics; he was a Private 3rd Class Petty Officer. After the war, Ted finished his college degree at Arizona State University with a Masters in Education. He took a Varsity Baseball position at both, North High School and Peoria High School. He won two State Championships in 4 years. He taught Driver’s Education and Physical Education at both schools. Due to funding, Driver’s Education was dropped and Ted went to work for the Arizona State Highway Traffic Safety Division as Assistant Superintendent. After 5 years with Traffic Safety, Jim Brock, Coach of Mesa High School, recommended Ted for the Baseball Coaching job in 1964. Ted taught Driver’s Education, Physical Education, and Biology. Ted has also received a Minor in Art and taught Ceramics. In 1988, Ted was inducted into the Arizona Coaches Association Hall of Fame. In 2000, he was inducted into the Arizona Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame. And in 2005, he was inducted into the Kappa Sigma Fraternity Hall of Fame out of the University of Arizona. Ted retired from Mesa High School in 1989. He and his wife, Kaye, then moved to Eagar, Arizona where Ted was called to Coach another 10 years, at Round Valley High School. He Substitute Taught there, all grades from Kindergarten through 12th grade. In 1999, they moved back to Mesa, Arizona. Ted continued to be involved in baseball, as he worked for ABC (Arizona Baseball Camps). Ted was an avid outdoorsman; loving hunting, fishing, and taking his family camping. Ted echoed the words of Dizzy Dean, looking back on his career, “It’s Not Bragging If You Did It!”. Ted said of all the accolades of his life, the best thing he ever did was give his life to the Lord, Jesus Christ. Ted passed from a long battle with Cancer, but in the end, God was merciful, and saw fit to call him HOME! Family would like to thank Thema Hospice for all of their tender care to Coach Fowler. There are not words to express their thanks to Bob, Frank, Nikki, Daycia, Linda, and Becky. Their care was phenomenal. Ted, your family will miss you greatly, but You are in a far better place!
